 رواية استثنائية لكاتب استثنائي، ولذلك يصعب إخضاعها لأي تصنيف تقليدي أو إلحاقها بسمات مألوفة تنطبق على أعمال أخرى، سواء لأعمال د. هـ. لورنس نفسه أو لغيره. ولا تنبع فرادة هذه الرواية فقط من اعتبار لورنس لها أفضل أعماله، بل من مجموعة خصائص تتقدّمها قدرته اللافتة على توظيف التقنية الروائية بمهارة مدهشة، جعلت منها عملًا متفرّدًا لا على مستوى الرواية الإنجليزية الحديثة فحسب، بل على المستوى العالمي. إن تصاعد الأحداث في هذه الرواية يجري بتناغم أقرب إلى حركات سيمفونية بيتهوفينية متقنة، حيث يجد القارئ نفسه منجرفًا مع تياراتها المتباينة في حالة من التلقي الحر والانغماس الكامل. ويبرز كذلك الحسّ اللورنسي المرهف، الذي يتوغّل في أعماق النفس الإنسانية، بل ويتجاوزها أحيانًا، كاشفًا أدقّ طبقات الوعي والشعور بجرأة صريحة لا تعبأ بالرقابة أو المواربة.

This is an exceptional novel by an exceptional writer, and for that reason it resists being confined to any single, conventional description that might apply to other novels, whether by D. H. Lawrence himself or by other authors. The novel’s uniqueness does not lie merely in the fact that Lawrence considered it his finest work, but rather in a set of qualities foremost among which is his remarkable command of narrative technique, not only within modern English fiction, but on a global scale.

Under his hand, the narrative develops much like the movements of a finely crafted Beethovenian symphony, drawing the reader irresistibly into its varied currents in a state of complete surrender and profound emotional engagement. Equally striking is the distinctly “Lawrentian” sensitivity that delves into the depths of the human psyche, and at times beyond the human altogether—laying bare the most minute inner cells and hidden impulses with uncompromising candor and without regard for any form of restraint or censorship.
